Some new books just came in to the library this month. These picture books offer up so much: great illustrations suited to each topic, interesting facts, and a chance to broaden our understanding of our world. ,Here's what I learned: The Sun was born 4.6 billion years ago. The Sun is just 1 in 100 billion stars in our galaxy. The sun can melt diamonds. The sun is not solid. Check this book out to see adorable illustrations and find out many more "Sun by the Numbers" facts! If you think there'd be a lot of numbers, even more numbers than the "Sun" book above, then you'd be mistaken about this book. This book ponders a huge number in a way that all of us, who are not mathematicians, can really understand. Uma, the little girl in the story, has a brand new pair of red shoes and she has a big question, "How could I even think about something as big as infinity?" She asks around. Her friend Samantha compares infinity to a never ending racetrack. Grandma talks about infinity through her ancestors . The lunchroom cook and the music teacher have different responses. But when Grandma notices her brand new shoes, Uma finds another answer to how big infinity is. I didn't know about Regina Jonas! I didn't know that she loved the Hebrew language and Bible stories. Here's a book that is all about perseverance and grit. Here's a real story about a woman who had the courage to say, "I will be what I will be." In 1935, she became the first woman ordained as a rabbi. How cool are picture books? Way cool! They offer so much. They certainly have increased my knowledge.
