Sometimes you come across a truly delightful book that makes a great read aloud. Sometimes, you are lucky enough to come across two! Yours Sincerely, Giraffe and its sequel, Dear Professor Whale are two such books. Weighing in at just 102 pages with words on only half of the page, and joyful black and white illustrations on the other half, these books should be enjoyed by many lower elementary school aged children.
Megumi Iwasa writes to engage readers. Kirkus review writes, "This is a rare book: joyful, ingenuous, playfully earnest, but without a whiff of studied cuteness." The illustrations by Jun Takabatake perfectly meld with the stories.
In the first book a bored Giraffe and Penguin become penpals. In the second books letters between penguins, griaffe, whales and seals bring about the Whale Point Olympics. As the Amazon review states, "the winners are friendship and humor." As I wrote above, lucky us; what a perfectly, delightful thing to find in a children's book.
My students call me "Lori the Librarian." For the past 25 years I have had the best job as School Librarian in the Aaron Kushner Library for grades K-3 at the Solomon Schechter Day School of Greater Boston.
