Stuck by Oliver Jeffers Rhyme Crime by Jon Burgerman Two fun picture books to read aloud to the three year old age group up towards first graders. From page one, you’re in for an adventure when Floyd’s kite gets stuck in a tree. Cause and effect drives “Stuck.” It’s humor derives from the fact that Floyd just won’t stop trying to get his kite down. This leads to trouble, because Floyd compounds his difficulty by continually throwing more things up into the tree. Jeffers use of, “various scribbles and blotches of paint” and casual handwriting with mixed upper and lower case letters create spontaneous looking illustrations that increase the overall presentation of this humorous tale. After reading this aloud I would definitely invite my child to create their own Stuck story and maybe even find a huge paper to make their own tree collaged with their own stuck things. Those readers who love rhymes will immediately be drawn in by the bold black and white, jail like cover of “Rhyme Crime” and want to begin solving the mystery right away. Burgerman colorfully and strongly fills each page with silly characters and a treacherous looking shadowy hand of a thief. Before turning to each subsequent page, give your child a chance to supply the missing rhyme then take some time to giggle over the illustrations. I loved all the inventive rhymes for orange and could imagine kids pouncing about with their own additional choices.
