Hard-Boiled Bugs For Breakfast and Other Tasty Poems By Jack Prelutsky; Drawings by Ruth Chan I share this new collection of poems with you by Jack Prelutsky, not because it’s such a great collection but because Poetry, with a capital P, is such a special thing to share with kids. The bunch of poems, in this book, are just right for lower elementary grade children. While some of them are funny, they are also a tad formulaic. However because they are easy for kids to read and will bring them giggles it’s a good place to start with poetry. If you go to a library and look for the Dewey Decimal number 811, you’ll find shelves upon shelves of great poetry books. Look for others by Prelutsky that are more humorous and more well defined, and of course look for the master of funny and thoughtful by Shel Silverstein. Other funny poems about every day life can be found in books by Kalli Dakos, Jeffrey Moss, and Bruce Lansky. Then after you get the kids settled in to listening to some poems, try these authors who delve into science and nature: Douglas Florian and Joyce Sidman. Look at collections by Patrick J. Lewis, Lee Bennett Hopkins, Mary Ann Hoberman, and Sunflakes by Lillian Moore. Check out the classics, Casey at the Bat and then the Midnight Ride of Paul Revere with illustrations by Christopher Bing. Don’t forget Edward Lear, Ogden Nash’s The Tale of Custard the Dragon or the sweet story in the picture book by Micha Archer, Daniel Finds a Poem.
Poetry, with a capital P, is definitely something that should be shared with all children!!!
