Paratou, the Umbrella By Marian Traore Africa, Amazing Africa : Country by Country By Atinuke; Illustrated by Mouni Feddag Letters to Live By: An Alphabet with Intention Written by Lisa Frenkel Riddiough; Illustrated by Asa Gilland I wanted to briefly make you aware of three new books. Teachers should especially take a look at these picture books as each one could be put to very good use during a classroom lesson for lower elementary school aged children. Paratou is a book about sharing and imagination. When Sekou has enough money he purchases a gift for his whole village: an umbrella. The specialness of this story is the many uses that people make of this treasure. The book is all about imaginative possibilities. Africa, Amazing Africa offers children a guide to the over 55 countries in this one continent. It celebrates the traditional and the contemporary in the diverse countries of Africa rather than lumping them altogether as just one place, which one often does without thinking. Letters to Live By offers a picture book alphabet centered around social-emotional actions that children can practice on a daily basis: forgive friends, join for justice, resist rumors…This book will be helpful during the times when you are setting and reviewing classroom rules. If I were in a school I would divide the pages of the book and make all the letters into posters to hang around the school.
