I am sorry that I missed this book, Gifts from the Enemy, when it was published in 2014. It is based on From a Name to a Number: A Holocaust Survivor’s Autobiography by Alter Wiener. Ludwig focuses on Wiener’s normal childhood, his memories of heavenly Shabbat challah. Her portrayal of his life prior to and during the Holocaust is well done. The narrative flows as respect and dignity become a thing of the past and desperation becomes the norm. When he no longer has the strength to go on, Alter receives a gift of food for 30 days from a stranger. He puzzles over this gift and concludes that In every group of people there is kindness or cruelty. His message is that stereotypes get in our way. It is how you treat people that is most important. Ludwig’s book, Weiner’s life story, Is a poignant read for our disturbing times as well.
It is worthwhile looking for her other titles: The Invisible Boy, Better Than You, My Secret Bully, Trouble Talk, Sorry and others.
