Shirley Chisholm is a Verb by Veronica Chambers, illustrated by Rachelle Baker I Am One: A Book of Action by Susan Verde, Art by Peter H. Reynolds I found reading this picture book very empowering. It opens up possibilities. It is a biography of the extraordinary Black woman, Shirley Chisholm. Her life was lived in service to her community, state and then her country. Twenty-nine plus verbs are highlighted throughout this book that show her to be the definition of a doer, an activist, and a progressive thinker. Teachers, (Grades 2-5) can use it to teach a part of speech but the class conversations will go beyond. Others will read it with children and and seriously think about, “What verbs will you choose,” in your lifetime? Pair this book with the one above or read this one first if you are reading to a younger child; a pre-Kindergartener. As in the other books that Verde and Reynolds have done together, the duo seamlessly combine words and art. I love the pacing of this picture book. Each page moves the child forward in small steps towards taking some action. In this one, they tackle, how, if I’m just one little kid, can I make a difference in my community and in my world. By using this book, a teacher or parent can plant the seeds of action and empower children towards caring for others and creating a better world.
