Swashby and the Sea Written by Beth Ferry; Illustrated by Juana Martinez-Neal Here’s another sweet story about a grumpy man who is won over by a really adorable little girl and her grandmother. The illustrator wonderfully captures the colors of the seaside and every lively expression and action of the characters. Salty Captain Swashby and the sea are best friends. They know each other so well. They absolutely don’t need or want any one else around in their lives. But into Swashby’s very calm, retired life comes an impish girl and her Granny who turn his life upside down. They delight in the sea, the sand and his things. When Swashby wants to tell them something, he refuses to talk to them but writes to them in the sand. However the sea has other ideas about Swashby’s words.“The sea fiddles with [the words], just a little bit.” It is with these word puzzles that the author elevates this familiar story: NO TRESPASSING gets mostly washed away and becomes...SING. NOW VANISH becomes...(you guess...okay I’ll tell you, WISH). When the little girl gets “slurped” away by the sea, Swashby must make a decision. The little girl or peace and quiet? A delightful story for pre-K up where kindness prevails and community grows!
